Recently, I had the great opportunity to talk to the new country duo “October Rose”. The duo is made up of Derek Allan and Leanne Weiss who were previously solo artists before linking up to form the duo. I got to ask them a few questions and learn more about their music! I hope y’all enjoy as much as I did!
1. Tell us about what made you interested in country music specifically.
“We both fell in love with country music as teenagers.
Leanne: Growing up, I listened to great female country singers like Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Faith Hill, and Martina McBride. It wasn’t until high school that I started channeling my teenage emotion and experiences into writing some country songs.
Derek: For me it was a girl. I was dating (or trying to) date a girl who introduced me to country music and it was love at first listen. It was around the time when Toby Keith’s “Whiskey Girl” came out which is still one of my favorite songs.”
2. If y’all could record a song with any artist who would it be and why?
“We would love a collaboration with Rascal Flatts. Gary LeVox has the voice of an angel, and the band’s harmonies are always spot on.”
3. I noticed that Leanne, specifically, is from New Jersey and Derek, you are from Pittsburgh. Are there any challenges with getting into the business not being from the south?
“Brantley Gilbert said it best: “Country must be country-wide.” No matter where you go, country fans are everywhere. It’s our job as artists to stand out and get their attention. We’ve noticed that country fans in the tri-state area are somewhat spread out, so one of the biggest challenges we face is finding the right venues to bring country fans together.”
4. How would y’all best describe your style of music as a duo?
“We like to say if Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood had a music baby that would be what we sound like in our live full-band shows. We have a modern country sound that incorporates elements of pop and rock.”
5. Both of you have had solo careers aside from this duo. Is it hard going from being solo to singing with another person?
“Actually, it’s been really awesome. When we realized our voices blended so well together we thought we could really stand out in the industry. Creating new harmonies can be challenging but rewarding when you take a song and elevate it with a beautiful harmony. In addition, we are both very confident and aligned in the sound we want to create in our upcoming EP.”
6. Finally, if someone came up to y’all asking for advice on how to get into the career, what would you tell them?
“We think the most important thing is to hone your craft. In this business there is always something to do from booking to social media posts but none of that works without great music. We think you can do this by focusing on three key areas. 1) Songwriting: learn as much as you can about songwriting and study great songs. Feed the songs you write, get feedback by playing at open mics or going to songwriter meetings and be open to criticism. If you’re struggling at songwriting, seek the advice of others and don’t be afraid to collaborate. There are also a lot of great songwriters out there that just need a great singer to take their song to the next level. 2) Have a clear vision for your music: Figure out what music genre and image you want to portray and own it! 3) Practice: You want to give it your best on every performance because you never know who will be listening. For us even after all these years we still both take voice lessons and try to get better at our craft every single day. Dream big!”
So there you have it! Y’all look out for the duo on the radio and follow them on social media so you can be the first to hear their new EP coming out soon!
